Meet The Team

The BSM Team

Each section is run by a uniformed Team Leader with the help of uniformed Team Members.  They are all unpaid volunteers and give a considerable amount of time and energy to provide good quality scouting.  (They are ordinary people doing extraordinary things!)

Sections are also supported by Young Leaders who are attached to an Explorer Group and may be involved within the Group as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

Ian Challinor (Rojo)
Lead Volunteer

I joined Scouting, like many others with my own children. I decided right from the off I wanted to get involved and be part of what I was being introduced to. I started off as a Beaver Section Assistant and quickly learned the ropes and moved up to take on the responsibility for the whole Group and I continue to enjoy my journey through Scouting and the people I have met. As well as Group Scout Leader I am also a District and Area Training Advisor and love bringing new people into Scouting and watching them develop whilst being an advocate to Scouting myself.

Beavers Team

Angela Hughes (Bobtail)
Team Leader

I am Angela the Beaver section leader I joined Scouts with my son in 2019 as his one to one and have loved every minute of it including meeting new people and  becoming part of the scouting family.

Cubs Team

Tim (Baloo)
Team Leader

Tim heads up the Cub team and has been around Scouting for many years. Tim creates and delivers a programme for cubs to experience new challenges and new opportunities, with support from across the rest of his team.

Callum (Mowgli)
Team Member

I’m Callum, and my scouting name is Mowgli. I’ve been through Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Army Cadets over the years and my Dad was a scout leader during my time. I work in IT as an ERP Consultant but aside from that I much prefer being outdoors either, hiking, camping, rock climbing, mountain biking or kayaking. I joined Buckley St Matthews as a Cub leader in 2016 when the group was relativly new and enjoy passing on new skills to the Cubs and seeing them advance to Scouts.

Leslie (Shere Khan)
Team Member

I’ve been volunteering with Scouts, in the Cubs Section, since 2017. I really enjoy watching the Cubs learn, grow and gain confidence through the activities that the Scouts movement provides…. from abseiling to baking and everything in between. My favourite badges to deliver are: Skills, Adventure, Artist, Scientist and World / International.

Lily (Jacala)
Team Member

David (Skitter)
Team Member

My name is Dave and my scouting name is Skitter! All 3 of my children are in scouting. Henri is a Cub, Lottie is a scout and Lily is just starting with explorers and is a young leader. I live in Buckley and work in IT for the UK Government. I enjoy scouting and the experiences it offers. I find it really helps me switch off from work whilst helping youngster’s experience things for the first time. The skills gained really do help with things outside of scouting.
Steve (Keego)
Team Member

My name is Steve, but the cubs call me Keego. My son started cubs in 2023 and I would regularly stay to help out as a parent volunteer. I found I enjoyed teaching the cubs new skills and watching them develop. It wasn’t long before I was wearing the ‘necker’ and became a regular member of the cubs team. By day, I work a very sedentary job in IT, so I enjoy getting outside with the cubs and doing all the stuff I used to do as a cub, many years ago.

Scouts Team

Steve Brereton (Squid) - Scouts
Team Leader

I have been a Scout Leader for over 10 years and i enjoy everything about the outdoors including camping, cooking on fires, adventure and learning new things.
I hope my experience can help all areas of the Group to make it the best it can be.
Fun Fact: My children find it really funny and weird that i can make my ears move by themselves.

Trustee Board

Jodie Challinor
Group Chair
Amanda Scotter
Group Secretary
Heather Johnson
Group Treasurer
Ian Challinor
Lead Volunteer

The Trustee Board plays a vital role in the running of a Scout Group. Trustee Boards will focus on governance activities. Support activities (such as fundraising, premises management or administration)

Group Leadership Team is responsible for the operational running fo the group, responsible for equipment an planning events across all sections.

This information should be treated as a guide and read in conjunction with other resources (including The Scout Association’s Policy, Organisation and Rules, referred to as POR throughout this factsheet).

Trustee Board

From April 2023, we’ll rename Executive Committees and Executive Committee Members as Trustee Boards and Trustees respectively.

Trustee Boards will focus on governance activities. Support activities (such as fundraising, premises management or administration) currently led by Executive Committees will move to other teams in the Group, District or County/Area/Region(Scotland).

Being clear about trusteeship

Every member of an Executive Committee already acts as a charity trustee. The renaming gives greater clarity on this.

Making the change aligns with guidance from charity regulators and helps Trustee Boards meet their governance responsibilities as charity trustees.

It also aims to help us recruit new volunteers by making roles and responsibilities easier to understand, and helping volunteers to get involved in a way that works for their skills, interests and availability.

Being clear about the purpose of Trustee Boards

Being clear about Trustee Boards’ governance purpose helps trustees to understand their responsibilities and carry these out in an effective way.

Separating governance and operational tasks will also help as we recruit new volunteers – and to retain those already part of our teams. For example, the person who’s great at managing the hall or running fundraising events might not have the skills, interests or time to be a trustee – but they can still be involved, as part of the Leadership Team or Support Team.
